A conversation with KILT Protocol’s Founder and CEO Ingo Rübe
KILT is a blockchain protocol for issuing self-sovereign, anonymous, verifiable credentials and decentralised identifiers. Part of the Kusama and Polkadot ecosystems.
But what exactly does that mean? Who better to ask than the creator of KILT himself! Ingo Rübe breaks it down for us in his own words.
Let’s start with the things that are most associated with KILT. What are decentralised identifiers and credentials?
Ingo: KILT Protocol is a system for maintaining identities. And here comes the first interesting part: an identity is something different from an identifier.
If…
KILT is a blockchain protocol for issuing decentralised identifiers and verifiable credentials. KILT brings the old process of trust in real-world credentials (passport, driving licence, certificates, etc.) to the digital world, representing your identity while keeping your data private and in your possession.
But KILT Protocol is not just for people. It can be used for machines, services and anything that identities can be built on, too.
Identity is multifaceted, made up of a unique combination of characteristics, attributes and properties that distinguish a person or object from others.
At KILT we break identity down into two key components:

In my previous blog post I outlined why KILT needs a parachain and provided a roadmap on how we plan to roll out KILT Protocol. Here, I will provide an update on how we envision the KILT Protocol as a Nominated Proof-of-Stake network.
KILT Protocol is designed to be a fully decentralised permissionless blockchain network. That means that KILT is being built to evolve into a blockchain that is run for the community, by the community, with all decisions being made by KILT token owners.
While the Kusama and Polkadot ecosystems are eagerly waiting for parachain auctions, we at KILT Protocol are preparing to secure one of the first Kusama parachain slots and then launch our mainnet. Today we are happy to announce our new releases of the KILT mashnet-node 0.24.0 and SDK 0.20.0 as the next phase of our development.
The mashnet-node received a second runtime for the parachain and multiple updates to run on Rococo using the newest version of Substrate (3.0.0). The SDK was multilaterally improved and restructured by splitting it into several separate packages.
These consecutive updates of our Substrate blockchain…

Here’s a quick update on KILT’s plans for the next few months as we get closer to mainnet launch. We’ll continue to update you on milestones and partnerships via this blog, our Twitter and Telegram channels and our newsletter. But first, a brief overview.
KILT provides a base layer for verifiable credentials in the Web 3.0 world. We’re building a permissionless trust infrastructure for real-world business cases like our DeFi, genetics testing, cloud computing and energy partnerships. We’re also exploring collaborations in climate change and gaming.
Why does KILT…
Initiative Will Build Upon Fractal’s Growing Base of 140,000 Users
28 January 2021, Berlin, Germany and Tallinn, Estonia — Fractal, KILT Protocol and Polkadex today announced a partnership to create a decentralised KYC system for exchange customers. Polkadex and Fractal will use the KILT Protocol as the underlying infrastructure for managing the KYC credentials required by Polkadex, to simplify and streamline the onboarding experience.
KILT Protocol will integrate Fractal’s user-centric KYC/AML platform, which is built for compliance with global, regulated industries. BOTLabs GmbH (the company behind KILT Protocol) will provide a wallet as a browser extension for customers to hold…
We are happy to announce that BOTLabs (the company behind KILT Protocol) and PureStake (the company developing the Moonbeam smart contract platform) will work together on Polimec (Polkadot Liquidity Mechanism). Both companies are part of the Polkadot Ecosystem and build on Parity’s Substrate framework.
Polimec is a fundraising mechanism for the Polkadot Ecosystem and it allows the issuance and transfer of multiple cryptocurrencies directly on a dedicated blockchain. The Polimec Blockchain is built on Substrate as well and therefore other Substrate based blockchains can utilize Polimec to issue tokens and make them available to the market even before their own…
Cross Compiling the Substrate-Node-Template to ARMv7
The Raspberry Pi is an unbelievably versatile piece of hardware. It can be used to build robots and automate boring tasks like watering your plants, turning on lights and music and much more. But can it also run a substrate based blockchain? The answer is yes!
First of all we need a little bit of time. There are two compile steps included that could take 30min of your CPU time each! …
